Design and interior of conference and meeting rooms at Koldinghus

Function Meets Heritage. Conferences in Royal Surroundings – A Bespoke Solution for Koldinghus

Introduction

Within the historic walls of Koldinghus—one of Denmark’s oldest royal castles—we helped create a conference and meeting space that both honors the building’s cultural heritage and meets modern functional requirements.

This project posed unique challenges in both design and execution. The result is a room where past and present merge seamlessly.

Understanding and Consideration

Working in a listed building isn’t just a design project—it’s an art of balance. Koldinghus needed a space capable of hosting conferences, meetings, and cultural events without compromising the castle’s character. We approached the task with humility and creativity.

“It was important for us to introduce something new—without disturbing the old.”

Respectful Design

The tables were custom-designed to complement the room, using materials and forms that echo the building’s history. Their red hue is inspired by architects Inger and Johannes Exner’s late-20th-century renovation of the castle.
The lighting was conceived as an installation—a specially fabricated fixture so large it had to be assembled on-site because it wouldn’t fit through the door.
Every element was designed for flexibility, allowing the room to transform easily to suit different needs.

A modern functionality wrapped in classic aesthetics.

Thoughtful Construction Process

The protected status of the environment required special care. We planned installation and transport to avoid any damage—and when the light fixture couldn’t be brought in fully assembled, we built it inside.
The entire process was closely coordinated with the museum’s operations and specialists in heritage buildings.

A Multi-Purpose Space

The finished result is a conference and meeting room that feels like a natural extension of Koldinghus. It can be reconfigured to suit any event and stands as a striking example of how contemporary design can harmonize with historic surroundings.

“We now have a space that works perfectly for our events—while fully respecting the building’s unique character.”
